What to Wear for Your Portrait Session: Tips to Look and Feel Your Best

Let’s be real- choosing outfits for a portrait session can feel like a big decision. You want to look your best, feel confident, and make sure everyone coordinates without being too matchy-matchy. The good news? It’s easier than it seems, and with just a few simple tips, you’ll be set up for a gorgeous, polished look that reflects your personality.

I work with so many amazing clients here in North Texas, and one of the most common questions I get is, “What should we wear?” So let’s break it down!

Choosing the right colors

When it comes to your senior photos, the goal is to look like you, just a little more polished and timeless. Start by thinking in terms of a color palette rather than a single color. Choose two to three coordinating tones like soft neutrals, earth tones, pastels, or muted jewel shades. These colors photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on your face- which is where we want the person looking at the photo to be focused on!

It’s also worth thinking about your skin tone when picking your outfit. If you have warm undertones, colors like olive, rust, mustard, or cream can make your skin glow. If you lean cooler, try soft blues, lavender, charcoal, or blush. The right tones will make your skin look fresh and your eyes pop, without needing a lot of editing.

Skip the neon, bold patterns, and busy graphics. They can be distracting and tend to age your portraits faster. Instead, opt for clean, classic pieces.

And if these photos are destined for your walls at home, keep your décor in mind, too. You want your portraits to feel like they belong.

The end goal? Clean, cozy, confident… and completely you

Add Texture and Keep Things Comfortable

Texture brings portraits to life. Think layers of linen, denim, knits, or cotton. A cozy cardigan, a breezy dress, a chambray shirt—these add visual interest and movement, especially in natural light. The North Texas sun gives us a gorgeous glow, and textured fabrics help play with that light beautifully.

Most importantly, choose pieces that feel good. If you’re fidgeting with your outfit or pulling at seams the entire time, that’ll show up in the final portraits. Make sure kids are in clothes that feel soft and non-restrictive. The more comfortable everyone feels, the more fun we’ll have during your session.

Don’t Forget the Details

Shoes, accessories, and little touches matter more than you might think. Clean, neutral shoes or even barefoot moments can keep the focus on your faces and connections. Avoid sneakers with bright logos or heels that are hard to walk in, comfort really is key.

If you’re not 100% sure what direction to go, bring a few backup outfits and your favorite old sweatshirt.  Sometimes just having options makes everything easier, and we can make quick changes depending on the vibe and location.

Let’s Create Something Beautiful

Wardrobe doesn’t have to be stressful. With just a little planning, you’ll walk into your session feeling excited and totally ready. I’m always happy to help with feedback or suggestions, this part should be fun, not frustrating.

If you're ready to plan your portrait session here in North Texas, let’s chat and start dreaming something up together. I can’t wait!
